Cortex Thickness Is Key for the Colors of Iridescent Starling Feather Barbules With a Single, Organized Melanosome Layer

چکیده
The iridescent plumage of many birds is structurally colored due to an orderly arrangement melanosomes in their feather barbules. Here, we investigated the blue- purple-colored feathers European starling ( Sturnus vulgaris ) and blue green Cape Lamprotornis nitens ). In both cases, barbules contain essentially a single layer melanosomes, but S. they are solid rod-shaped, L. hollow rod- as well platelet-shaped. We analyzed coloration by applying imaging scatterometry, bifurcated-probe- micro-spectrophotometry. reflectance spectra showed multiple peaks distinct, peak for feathers. Assuming that two species simple multilayer, consisting locally only cortex plus interpret experimental data effective-medium-multilayer modeling. optical modeling provides quantitative insight into function keratin thickness, being principal factor determine wavelength bands; melanosome plays minor role. air cavity creates strongly enhanced refractive index contrast, thus very effectively causing high reflectance.

Nanostructural self-assembly of iridescent feather barbules through depletion attraction of melanosomes during keratinization.
Avian plumage colours are model traits in understanding the evolution of sexually selected ornamental traits. Paradoxically, iridescent structural colours, probably the most dazzling of these traits, remain the most poorly understood. Though some data suggest that expression of bright iridescent plumage colours produced by highly ordered arrays of melanosomes and keratin is condition-dependent,...
متن کاملWhat makes a feather shine? A nanostructural basis for glossy black colours in feathers.
Colours in feathers are produced by pigments or by nanostructurally organized tissues that interact with light. One of the simplest nanostructures is a single layer of keratin overlying a linearly organized layer of melanosomes that create iridescent colours of feather barbules through thin-film interference. Recently, it has been hypothesized that glossy (i.e. high specular reflectance) black ...
متن کاملIridescent structural colour production in male blue-black grassquit feather barbules: the role of keratin and melanin.
Iridescent coloration plays an important role in the visual communication system of many animal taxa. It is known that iridescent structural colours result from layers of materials with different refractive indexes, which in feathers usually are keratin, melanin and air. However, the role of these materials in the production of structural iridescent coloration is still poorly documented. Despit...
متن کاملStructural coloured feathers of mallards act by simple multilayer photonics.
The blue colours of the speculum of the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), both male and female, and the green head feathers of the male arise from light interacting with stacks of melanosomes residing in the feather barbules. Here, we show that the iridescent colours can be quantitatively explained with an optical multilayer model by using a position-dependent effective refractive index, which resu...
متن کاملStructural color change following hydration and dehydration of iridescent mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) feathers.
Dynamic changes in integumentary color occur in cases as diverse as the neurologically controlled iridiphores of cephalopod skin and the humidity-responsive cuticles of longhorn beetles. By contrast, feather colors are generally assumed to be relatively static, changing by small amounts only over periods of months. However, this assumption has rarely been tested even though structural colors of...
